Scotland’s New Rent Controls Put Starmer’s Measly Reforms to Shame | Novara Media

Scotland's New Rent Controls

Author's summary: Scotland introduces rent controls.

In September, the Scottish government passed a law limiting landlord rent increases. This move surpasses Labour's renters' rights bill, according to Gordon Maloney.

After a decade of campaigning by Living Rent, a Scottish tenants' union, the Scottish government reintroduced rent controls, the first country in the UK to do so. The Housing (Scotland) Act allows local authorities to introduce rent control areas, capping rent increases at the consumer prices index plus 1%, or a maximum of 6% per year.

This is a necessary and overdue measure, given that rents in Scotland have increased by over 60% since 2010. In Edinburgh, rents have doubled, highlighting the need for such controls.

The newly-passed law won't come into effect until 2027.
